The journey

I came up as an engineer at a software company that was later acquired. After the transition I left and started my own — bootstrapped, no venture capital, three co-founders in a room. My PhD in machine learning at Swansea sat behind the technical work the whole way through.

I ran that second company for seven years as CEO. We grew from those three co-founders to an international team serving enterprise clients across financial services, technology, and consulting. We built it without outside funding, made architecture decisions under budget pressure, and learned — at some cost — what to build first and what to let wait until there were real users and real revenue.

That experience taught me everything the PhD didn't: when to build custom versus buy off-the-shelf, how to hire and lead engineering teams, how to sell to enterprises, how to keep a business cashflow-positive while shipping hard things. The combination — research-grade depth plus founder-grade discipline — is what I bring to the engagements I take on now.

What I bring to early-stage work now isn't a playbook. It's the willingness to be in the codebase and in the strategic conversation in the same week — and the experience to know which one a given problem actually needs. Most senior hires lose one or the other. I haven't, because for seven years I had to do both, every day, on a bootstrapped budget, with real customers paying the bills.
